POWER AND PLACE

Conference News!

Thank you to our 3 keynotes, 131 presenters and panellists, 153 delegates and 18 sponsors for a fabulous conference! The quality of papers and discussion was excellent and we know that much productive cross-fertilisation of research has begun and will continue to grow as a result of our gathering here in Wellington. We also thought it was wonderful that we were given the opportunity at ANZCA08 to try out new communication technologies involving online presentations. Two presenters joined us via Wimba from Queensland, and two presenters joined us via Second Life from South Australia. We feel rather proud to have trialled these first instances of virtual presentation at an ANZCA conference and extend our utmost thanks to our multi-talented multi-media technician Mark Smith who made it possible.

Other news is that the 68 refereed papers are all available online now: just click the 'refereed proceedings' link on the left menu.

In closing, we extend our particular congratulations to the 29 people who won paper or presentation awards at ANZCA08: Ann Penhallurick, Bahiyah Omar, Jill Lawrence, Michael Sankey, Meredith Marra, Bernadette Vine, Janet Holmes, Slavka Antonova, Warwick Blood, Andrew Dare, Kerry McCallum, Kate Holland, Jane Pirkis, Heather Kavan, Marianne Sison, Melanie James, Mingjing Chen, Denis Cryle, Jason Noble, Djavlonbek Kadirov, Richard Varey, Grant Hannis, Rowan Wilken, John Sinclair, Elspeth Tilley, James Hollings, Marilyn Mitchell, Iain Sutherland, and Anna Potter. Thank you to all the referees and stream coordinators who judged the various paper awards, and to the conference delegates for getting behind the People’s Choice prize, which we introduced for the first time this year and hope to see continue into the future.

We look forward to catching up with everybody again at ANZCA09, which will be hosted by Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. See you all there!

ANZCA is the peak professional body for communication, mass communication, public relations, and journalism educators in Australasia, and the annual conference is always a lively and collegial opportunity to explore and debate new research directions in communication. We are the biggest annual gathering in Australasia for communication educators and researchers - and often noted as an extremely friendly conference, too!

The theme in 2008 is Power and Place, an emphasis inspired by the location in Wellington, the political capital of Aotearoa New Zealand. We have the flexibility to accommodate a wide variety of perspectives on communication, place, and power.

KEYNOTES

Keynote speaker Professor Maxwell McCombs is of course famous for his development of agenda setting theory, still one of the most influential theories of media effects, while keynote speaker Professor Jennifer Craik has an international reputation in cultural and media theory, including globally cited work on the cultural power of fashion. We look forward to their different takes on issues of power.

Also delivering a keynote address, New Zealand's own Nicky Hager has changed the face of politics in this country through his investigative journalism work, and continues to hold politicians and public relations operators from all sectors of the political spectrum to account in his best-selling books.

Our special guest contributor Professor Karen Ross, who will lead a panel discussion on politics and the media, has written extensively on the relationship between women, politics and media, and on broader issues of in/equality in higher education, communication and culture.

The conference's opening address on issues of power and place will be delivered by Professor Ngatata Love, Professor of Business Development at Victoria University of Wellington. Professor Love has worked extensively on Māori social, economic and Waitangi Tribunal issues, and formerly was CEO of Te Puni Kokiri (Ministry of Māori Development) for five years.

See more detail on each speaker at the Confirmed Speakers link at left.

WHEN AND WHERE

ANZCA08 will be held 9-11 July 2008 at the Duxton Hotel in Wellington, and will feature, in addition to addresses and panel involvement from our keynotes, a range of presenters on journalism, communication, mass media, and cultural studies topics from Australia, New Zealand, and the world.
